What does a controller do at GEZE, Mr Eren?

Anyone who speaks to the 34 year-old Hayri Eren will quickly realise: He has a gift for helping people understand what he is talking about, and for unpacking technical terms so they can be understood by laypersons. No wonder, since the Team Lead of Controlling Standards & Systems considers his work to be not only collecting and preparing figures and data, but advising the different departments at GEZE as well.

To GEZE with Google

After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration when he was 22, he knew: “I've studied enough; now I want to do something practical”. A Google search brought him to the advertisement for a “Business Trainee” at GEZE, and he applied right away. “At the time I wasn’t familiar with GEZE, although I am from close by in Esslingen. I just knew that I definitely didn’t want to be just another number in some big group company. Individuality and legroom are very important to me”. He found both of them quickly, as the daughter of the former managing director, Andrea Alber, was sitting at the table with him during his second interview. “I thought it was a really positive sign that a member of the owning family was involved in the hiring of a trainee, and actually showed interest in me. It was clear to me how important the younger generation is here, as well as how flat the hierarchies truly are”.

I have grown together with the company, both as a person and as a specialist and manager. I am both proud and thankful for that.

True training for emergencies

During his 12-month initial training phase, Hayri Eren often saw how trainees are taken seriously, and how important their work truly is. “I moved through all of the departments relevant for me as an economics graduate. Finance, Human Resources, Purchasing, Supply Chain, GEZE Service – I liked Controlling the best, however, because I always had an affinity to it”. He was faced with some difficult tasks when the former Head Controller was absent for a long period of time during the company’s planning phase. “As a trainee, I was allowed to take on important coordination tasks for the planning of GEZE GmbH. These are experiences that help you grow”. By then, he knew what he wanted to do in the future: Controlling, in particular digitising planning and reporting processes.

We have a very digital culture here now, and luckily aren’t using very many Excel reports anymore. We only use digital reports and dashboards in both the planning process and in data analysis.

With standardisation and IT tools …

His team's duties include not only harmonising KPIs and defining reporting standards for the GEZE Group, but also servicing and developing business intelligence systems, the underlying IT structure. “My team is in continuous contact with the IT department. Having a certain level of affinity for IT is very helpful”. He helped introduce the most important tools the company uses for controlling and planning as a Project Manager during his now 11-year career at GEZE. “I am very proud that I have had an important hand in promoting GEZE's digitisation in this area. At the same time, I am thankful for the support I have always gotten from corporate management”.

… shaping the digital transformation

Hayri Eren knows that the digital transformation in the company will only work when the new systems offer clear advantages to users, and when users accept them. A functional system landscape that identifies and processes the right data from source systems is essential in this context. However, it is also important that the analyses are prepared so they are easy to understand and presented in a way that is appealing. “We want to move away from complex rows of figures. And we want to be able to give management and decision-makers the data relevant for them at all times. We have a reporting tool for this purpose that delivers the desired analyses in real time”.

I don’t see myself in the traditional role of a controller as just preparing figures. Instead, I act as a consultant to the different departments. We optimise processes relevant to reporting together, and I support my contact persons with controlling tasks.

His role: Business Consultant

Hayri Eren has a clear idea of the role he and his team want to play. “We are internal data service providers for our business areas and subsidiaries. You can tell this is the case because we don’t call ourselves controllers – instead, we are business consultants”. His team is always on board when the company introduces new processes or optimises existing ones. “We address the content for the reports with departments, identify suggestions for action, and try to participate in controlling tasks”. For Eren, who has a degree in business administration, this means diving deep into areas that are outside of his expertise, like Engineering. “Ultimately, controlling is always involved as the top of the pyramid. Everything that any department does ultimately needs to be analysed in some way – that’s where we come into play”.

Stick with it, and always keep an open mind

This makes the job highly diverse and dynamic – which is what makes the work so exciting and fascinating for him. “I don’t have a standard work day. Every day is different, because every project is different. I face new challenges every day – that is fun for me”. He needs to not only keep an open mind, but also stick with technical challenges. “Digitisation is a living process. New things are developed all the time that we need to have on our screen as we develop our systems. For me and my whole team, that means always staying up to date”.

Change – the only constant

If you ask the young father what he would like to change about his work, his answer is clear: “I don’t want to change anything from a career perspective. Working at GEZE is my dream job. In general, however, change is a constant in my work – we have to change continuously and set out on new paths. That’s just part of it”. For him, what is important is questioning everything and developing his abilities. “I think broadening your horizons is important. That’s the only way we can keep contributing to GEZE's success”.
